And More Cathode Ray Tubes! (Page 3)

Even More CRTs Most of the CRTs shown here are from oscilloscopes. The first image on the top right is from a Gould oscilloscope. This Mullard manufactured tube was used in both their analogue and digital storage scopes. Its electron gun can be seen with the picture link to the gun page.


The second tube is from a 1960 HP oscilloscope. This is quite a large tube being about 40cm long. It has an internally printed graticule on the screen and uses an intensifier on the electron gun final anode to increase brightness by secondary electron emission. (Part# 5083-0652)

The third tube was manufactured by Brimar and used in a Telequipment scope. These scopes were commonly used in colleges and universities at one point. The were interesting as the gun has a beam splitter to create a proper dual-beam tube. This became less popular with multiple traces being achieved with chopping or alternate traces being generated electronically.


Image (4) is a small oscilloscope tube built like an old radio valve and often used in early educational scopes.

CRT (5) is a GEC manufactured scope tube and like the Brimar was manufactured for a Telequipment scope.


To the lower right (6) is another Telefunken CRT. This is larger and an older type and was used in ultrasonic weld defect detecting equipment.


(7) This is a small radar CRT with a 4.5in long persistence orange phosphor display. It has quite a long neck and uses electromagnetic deflection and external focusing. It was manufactured by Cintel


Finally, the 8th CRT is similar in construction to no.4 above, but smaller with a just over 2in screen. This is actually quite an early TV CRT by Philips and used for B&W projection TVs. It has a very bright output for its age and uses an aluminised coating to protect the screen coating. The black and white image was optically projected onto a 21-inch screen for viewing. The anode volage at 25kV is much higher than for CRT at this time.


(9) This last CRT is an experimental tube based on early radar. It has a blue phosphor and the X / Y plates have connections on the neck.
